The inaugural Heritage Hands Festival is a celebration of Australia’s living heritage – bringing together traditional makers, craftspeople, artists, historians, educators and community organisations to share the knowledge, skills and stories that connect us to our past and inspire future generations.
Across three days, the festival transforms Sandgate Town Hall into a vibrant hub of creativity, learning and community connection. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet extraordinary makers, watch traditional skills demonstrated firsthand, participate in workshops, hear inspiring talks, explore local heritage through guided walks, enjoy live music, and discover beautifully crafted work in the Heritage Makers Market.
More than a festival, Heritage Hands is part of a growing movement to celebrate, document and preserve Australia’s living heritage. Many traditional skills are at risk of disappearing as experienced practitioners retire without opportunities to pass on their knowledge. Heritage Hands exists to ensure these skills remain visible, valued and accessible through storytelling, education, community participation and cultural celebration.
The Sandgate Festival marks the beginning of a long-term program of Heritage Hands events and initiatives that will expand across Queensland and beyond, creating opportunities for communities to connect with local makers, celebrate place-based knowledge and inspire the next generation of artisans and creative practitioners.
